"I lost my mom nine months and 16 days ago. That statement alone should be enough to depict the emptiness and heartbreak I have endured - but it doesn’t...

The time that has passed feels irrelevant. At least that's what I tell myself as I continue to try and cover the gaping hole that sits within me. My mom was my best friend. Partner. Confidant. Coach. Caretaker. Comedian. Source of knowledge, hope, and strength.

Perfection is what she strove for in all that she did, but did not achieve. Which makes sense since in most situations perfection is impossible to obtain. Mom always tried to lead with love and kindness - sharing her smile and acknowledging anyone who crossed her path.

She listened and took opportunities to acknowledge others - to show them that someone really does care. She was really great at doing random acts of kindness.

Finding joy in the hectic world we live in can feel daunting. However, simple, random acts of kindness can spark feelings of gratitude in both the giver and the recipient.

A hug from a stranger. Unexpected help from a friend. A warm good morning from a co-worker. These interactions are woven into our daily lives.

Taking time to notice these moments and allowing them to act as a catalyst for spreading joy is one thing I now strive to do.

The sun sets on its own. Let’s be like my mom - let’s create light and warmth by simply spreading love to those around us."
